About

Jane E. Wilcox, FGBS, is a professional genealogist and Fellow of the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society specializing in early New York research prior to the Civil War. She combines traditional genealogical research with DNA analysis and offers in-person guidance in New York repositories.

Jane E. Wilcox is a professional genealogist and Fellow of the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society (FGBS) with deep expertise in early New York ancestry research prior to the Civil War. She is the author of "New York State Archives Guide: For Family Historians, Biographers, and Historical Researchers" (2024), awarded first place in the 2025 National Genealogical Society's Award of Excellence: Methods and Sources Book category. Jane specializes in tracking down original sources and records that can only be found on the ground in ancestors' backyards, particularly in the New York region including New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, the Hudson River valley, the Mohawk River valley, and upstate New York. She uses traditional genealogical research combined with DNA testing and analysis. Jane works flexibly with clients—offering in-person guidance in New York repositories, collaborative research partnerships, or comprehensive research reports. She is a former teacher, an instructor at multiple genealogy institutes (IGHR, SLIG, GRIP), and a speaker at National Genealogical Society, Federation of Genealogical Society, and regional conferences. She hosted "The Forget-Me-Not Hour: Your Ancestors Want Their Stories to Be Told" radio show (2010-2018) and has served as a research consultant for NYG&B research trips and a consultant for the TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
