About
Founded in 1921, GSNJ is dedicated to the discovery, preservation, and publication of information pertaining to families and individuals associated with New Jersey.
The Genealogical Society of New Jersey (GSNJ) was founded in 1921 by genealogical scholars dedicated to the preservation of New Jersey family history. The Society began by organizing 'tombstone hunts' at burial grounds around the state. Incorporated in 1924, GSNJ's mission is to discover, procure, preserve and publish information pertaining to families and individuals associated with New Jersey. Since its founding, GSNJ has collected manuscripts and research papers, with extensive collections housed at Special Collections and University Archives at Rutgers University. The Society publishes The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, recognized as a national leader among genealogical publications and the preeminent resource for transcribed primary source material from New Jersey. GSNJ also publishes the GSNJ Newsletter and numerous reference works, sponsors educational programs, and collaborates with other genealogical and historical organizations to promote New Jersey genealogy and history.
